DSL - Occam
A better way to deal with increasing
demands on your access network.
The face of telephone service is changing
fast. With a multitude of broadband services
including DSL, IPTV and VoIP in addition
to POTS, specials circuits and T1 services,
access networks have grown increasingly
complex. That’s why your choice of an access
network solution — your company’s point
of contact with the customer — is more
critical than ever.
The increase in service breadth and
complexity places significant new demands
on your access network. Until recently,
traditional technologies and network
elements could stretch to cover initial
broadband service offerings with minimal
subscriber take rates and fractional megabit
data services. However, those days have
come to an end.
To enable the services that will increasingly
drive revenue while ridding the network
of complexity, telcos around the globe are
turning to Occam Networks and its IP and
multigigabit Ethernet-based BLC 6000.
Unique capabilities, unique approach
To design the BLC 6000, we started
with a simple yet far-reaching philosophy:
“The simplest solution is the best.” This
mandate drove the decision to build the
product around two key technologies:
IP, because it is the protocol over which
most data services today, and nearly all
services tomorrow, will be delivered; and
Ethernet, the most cost effective technology
for high-speed broadband networks.
Designed for present-day realities as well
as future potential, the BLC 6000 plat-
form optimizes IP and Ethernet to deliver
POTS as well as broadband. As a result,
the ability to provide lifeline service, “five
nines” reliability and integration into Class
5 switching as well as multimegabit high-
speed Internet and IP video — over both
copper and fiber plant — now resides in
a single platform.
The BLC 6000 is a telecom-and-data
platform without compromise. More IP-
capable than traditional Digital Loop
Carriers or new ultra-ATM/SONET
platforms and more voice- and T1-capable
than traditional DSLAM platforms,
the BLC 6000 stands alone.
Significantly lower your total cost of ownership
Network Strategy Partners has found the IP and Ethernet
technology used in the BLC 6000 to be significantly less costly
to deploy and operate than both old NGDLCs and new ATM/
SONET-based access equipment. Network Strategy Partners
attributes the savings to the simplicity of using IP and Ethernet
to support both traditional and next-generation services.
BLC 6000: Meeting demand by design
The Occam BLC 6000 integrates the
functions of an NGDLC, DSLAM, OLT,
Optical Mux, VoIP line access gateway,
line test system and Ethernet switch into
an environmentally hardened loop carrier
system. The system includes plug-in blades,
high capacity and stackable chassis, cabinets
and an Element Management System.
It supports standard lifeline POTS tele-
phones, DSL modems and GigE ONUs.
The BLC 6000 connects POTS and
VoIP to a traditional Class 5 via TR-08
or GR-303. In addition, it can support IP
IADs, terminal adapters or IP phones as
well as connect POTS into next-generation
IP softswitches. Choose one or the other,
or mix and match simultaneously.
The BLC 6000 incorporates a unique,
distributed architecture that enables system
blades to operate in a 12-slot high capacity
chassis or in stackable 1RU chassis.
Value-adding innovation
Today’s access networks require more
than simple connectivity. Occam Networks
has advanced the BLC 6000 system to
include a number of innovative, service-
enhancing technologies.
BLC 6660: Emergency Stand Alone Switching
The BLC 6660 enables isolated networks
to continue to make local call connections
and connections to emergency services
in the event of loss of direct connection to
the host switch. With a BLC 6660, many
telcos are simplifying their networks by
eliminating remote switches.
OccamView: Service Management Tools
and Element Management System
OccamView is a management software
suite that simplifies the provisioning,
management and troubleshooting of
BLC networks. Beyond user statistics
and alarms, OccamView includes tools
to manage and troubleshoot Video-over
DSL and VoIP service offerings.
Fiber to the Premise
The BLC 6312 FTTP blade enables
active optical Ethernet connections
to homes and businesses. With bandwidth
capacity up to one Gbps per
customer and integrated 10 Gbps
transport, the BLC FTTP solution
continues Occam’s commitment to
simple, flexible service.
